The Fortezza (fortress)
The Fortezza when it was built between 1573 - 1580, it was the largest fortress on Crete. Take the chance to make a walk in the castle and enjoy the panoramic view of Rethymno and of the deep blue Cretan sea from above. You can walk along the old defensive trenches, between the towers, bastions and gates, among the solitary palm trees. Here, too, is the Erofyli open-air theater, which hosts the celebrated Renaissance Festival every summer. This Venetian castle has been hosting plays, music, and dance events, as well as painting exhibitions, conferences, and film festivals
